Motown Legacy

As an irresistible force of social and cultural change, the legendary Motown portfolio made its mark not just on the music industry, but society at large, with a signature Motown Sound that has become one of the most significant musical accomplishments and stunning success stories of the 20th century.

Discover The Legacy

Like many other African Americans in the early 20th century, Berry Gordy, Sr. and his wife, Bertha Fuller Gordy, came North from Georgia to find a better life for themselves and their family.

Gordy Family

Motown is an extended family of some of the most iconic and influential artists, musicians and songwriters of our time. Brought together by destiny through their love for making music, they found themselves making history.

Motown Artists

The culmination of years of planning, hard work and generous contributions from dedicated donors, the highly anticipated, $50 million Motown Museum expansion project will grow the museum campus to a 50,000-square-foot world-class entertainment and education tourist destination.

MOTOWN EMPOWERS

At Motown Museum, we believe in the transformative power of opportunity. We honor the Motown legacy created by Berry Gordy and preserved by Esther Gordy Edwards—a legacy that has inspired generations to dream, create, and lead. Aaron’s journey reminds us why this work matters.

Aaron grew up in Detroit and likes to say his love of Motown began before he was born—rooted in the songs his mother sang to him in the womb. A gifted musician who sings, composes, and plays five instruments, his talent has carried him from intimate solo performances to the national stage.

But even with his gifts, Aaron was searching for a place where his passion could thrive. His path to the Museum began the day he was let go of a tech job—the very day he noticed an opening for a docent at Motown Museum. He took it as a sign.

“Leaving the tech field for the museum was like two worlds colliding, but I knew I had to take the risk. I felt I could find a greater opportunity at Motown.”

At Motown Museum, Aaron found more than a job. He found a community that nurtures his creativity and challenges him to grow. Just one year into his new role, Aaron was nominated for Visit Detroit’s Rose Awards, which honor exceptional hospitality professionals across the region. Among hundreds of nominees, Aaron received the top distinction—Overall Service Champion. His story reflects the empowerment that happens every day within our walls, and he is just one of many.

“Being at Motown Museum has helped me grow as a musician, songwriter, and professional. It’s given me the chance to take my career to the next level where I can apply my skills to make an impact.”

As we expand our museum and strengthen our programs, we remain committed to supporting individuals like Aaron by creating opportunities for skills development, artistic growth, and personal transformation—opportunities that ripple through families, neighborhoods, and generations. But this work is only possible with your support.

Please consider making a year-end gift to Motown Museum. Together, we can continue building a place where inspiration lives and future generations are empowered to shine.
