Motown Legacy

As an irresistible force of social and cultural change, the legendary Motown portfolio made its mark not just on the music industry, but society at large, with a signature Motown Sound that has become one of the most significant musical accomplishments and stunning success stories of the 20th century.

Discover The Legacy

Like many other African Americans in the early 20th century, Berry Gordy, Sr. and his wife, Bertha Fuller Gordy, came North from Georgia to find a better life for themselves and their family.

Gordy Family

Motown is an extended family of some of the most iconic and influential artists, musicians and songwriters of our time. Brought together by destiny through their love for making music, they found themselves making history.

Motown Artists

The culmination of years of planning, hard work and generous contributions from dedicated donors, the highly anticipated, $50 million Motown Museum expansion project will grow the museum campus to a 50,000-square-foot world-class entertainment and education tourist destination.

A Bold New Future

“It brings me real joy, and I am proud and humbled to know, that the inclusive legacy of Motown, and the most talented people who are so near and dear to my heart, will have their stories told in this new Museum.”

Berry Gordy, Founder, Motown Records

The culmination of years of planning, hard work, and generous contributions from dedicated donors, the highly anticipated, multi-phase, $65 million Motown Museum expansion—the heart of which is called Hitsville NEXT—will grow the museum campus to a 50,000-square-foot world-class entertainment and education tourist destination.

Headquartered in three historic, Motown-era homes on West Grand Boulevard, Hitsville NEXT is a creative hub for entrepreneurship and education designed to offer impactful, community-focused engagement programs in a state-of-the-art facility.

Once the full expansion is complete, it will feature:

  • Dynamic, Interactive Exhibits
  • Professional Recording Studio
  • An Expanded Retail Experience
  • State-of-the-Art Performance Theater
  • A Casual-Style Café offering light food and drinks

The new Motown Museum will be designed and built around the current Museum space and cherished Hitsville U.S.A. house.

With new facilities, new programs and new resources coming online, Motown Museum will continue to enhance accessibility, elevate surrounding communities and cement our role as a global leader in providing education and world-class resources for budding artists and entrepreneurs.

From the moment the Motown Museum expansion was first announced, the response has been overwhelming—and deeply humbling. Our project has received support from celebrities, artists, entrepreneurs and innovators, as well as dignitaries, civic and community leaders.

This expansion would not have been possible without their generosity and sincere commitment to the future vision of this institution—but it’s not finished yet. Make your support felt by making a donation to Motown Museum’s expansion campaign now.
